Here’s me enjoying this amazing colourful mountain view in the afternoon sun. Even before flying out to South America, these mountains – the Serranías del Hornocal – were on my wish list to visit in Northern Argentina. And I made it!
With friends I’d made in my hostel back in Sucre we travelled by bus to Humahuaca in the Jujuy province. After checking in to our hostel and leaving our bags, we found a car to drive us to El Hornocal.
Our original plan had been to self-drive and rent a car from Salta to explore the province. However, walking around Salta to car rentals we quickly discovered that Easter meant nearly all cars had been hired. In other words, we were too late! If visiting at Easter, hire a car in advance! One agency had a small car left, but advised us against self driving as we were unfamiliar with the roads. A lot were windy and gravelly. So that was why we opted for public transport! Looking back now, we could have driven it and en route we passed several rental vehicles. You either need to be confident driving or be with someone who is!
We spent an hour at the viewpoint. Walking back up the trail to the carpark involved frequent pauses for me to catch my breath. Whilst not hugely steep, we were at 4350m so altitude came into play! It was such a great afternoon and the mountains were really beautiful!
