On this Day: Peru’s Aguas Turquesas

A day trip to Ayacucho’s Aguas Turquesas – I remember the seriously cold water and the cramp that followed!

On my first trip to South America in 2017, I followed Peru’s well travelled route – Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, Arequipa, Cusco and Lake Titicaca. I didn’t know back then about a place called Ayacucho and its collection of turquoise pools.

When I returned to South America in 2019 for my second trip and knew I was revisiting Cusco, I was very very keen to slot a visit to Ayacucho into my journey. Cusco was a 14hr bus drive away, so while not super close, I still considered Ayacucho close enough to visit. I’m very glad I did!

The pools were great and the water so turquoise, clear and fresh! Places like here really remind me how incredible nature is!

I will also remember this day trip as the first tour I’d been on in Peru where I was the only non-Peruvian. It was a good chance to practice my Spanish!
