On this Day: Seven Lakes Road Trip, Bariloche

7 lakes drive Bariloche car road sunset

I teamed up with three other backpackers for a road trip. We hired this little red car for the day to drive the seven lakes route, from Bariloche, via Villa La Angostura, to San Martin de Los Andes.

Like the name of the route suggests, we passed seven lakes and it was wonderfully scenic! The Bariloche area isn’t called the lake district for nothing! There are a lot of lakes to see!

It was a long day of driving, especially for our chosen driver! Which wasn’t me – I wasn’t confident at the time to drive, let alone on the other side of the road! Looking back now, I wish I’d arrived to South America confident with my driving capabilities. Renting a car is often the best way to explore places – the freedom and flexibility it gives!

For the return journey, instead of driving the same way back on Ruta 40, we turned onto Ruta 65 – an unpaved road with more lakes, different scenery and a sunset for us. We knew we’d be driving slower, but none of us expected the route to take as long as it did. Perhaps we were being overly cautious! The road was also blocked twice by cows and sheep, much to our amusement!
