I visited the Perito Moreno Glacier on a sunny afternoon two years ago. I’d arrived just before midday to El Calafate, the glacier’s nearest town and base for visiting.
I was planning to visit the following day, but a quick glance at the weather had me dashing back to the bus station to catch the last afternoon bus to the glacier. Funnily enough, I wasn’t the only one who’d changed plans in a split second. There were two other girls at the ticket office thinking the same as me. We teamed up!
I’d say the Perito Moreno Glacier is Patagonia’s most famous glacier. It’s massive and is one of the few glaciers in the world that continues to grow! Walking along the walkways and viewing the glacier from different angles was impressive. It made me feel quite small!
Occasionally, we’d hear a crack and then a splash as a chunk of ice fell into the water. On our wanders, we spotted one large block off ice that looked like it was almost ready to fall off the main glacier. Amazingly, during our last half an hour, there was a loud crack and the large ice chunk hit the water. The splash and echo that followed was loud! Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
