Today, two years ago, I was on Isla Magdalena with penguins!
This photo just makes me smile. Such a content little chap, eyes closed soaking up the sun’s rays (likely similar to how I looked on the beaches in Mexico at the end of my trip!).
I was really keen to see penguins in Patagonia. So, I’m very happy I stopped off in Punta Arenas and joined a boat trip to Isla Magdalena.
Reminiscing…what I remember:
- The penguins of course! There’s just something about them. I can’t say what exactly, their character and the way they waddle perhaps! I loved observing them in their environment, chilling or heading into the water.
- The strong funky smell of birds and poop that engulfed me when I walked onto the island. Thank goodness for the blustery winds! A natural fan!
- The bumpy boat ride there and back – more choppy than calm waters! And grateful that we didn’t have to turn back due to the weather.
- When trying to get to the boat terminal, how long it took me to realise a colectivo was a car, not a van! I’d been looking for the wrong vehicle, it then made so much sense!
