On this Day: My Cerro Guanaco Day Hike

Hiking Cerro Guanaco was the highlight from my Ushuaia stay. A rewarding, yet tough in parts, hike for sure! I’m very glad I hiked it!

Gosh, it’s been hard choosing one photo to be my ‘on this day’ Cerro Guanaco post. I have several I really like. In every direction, the landscapes and views were brilliant: snow dusted mountains, the Beagle Channel in the distance and turquoise lakes.

I chose the above photo because it takes me back to hiking the last leg of the ascent to Guanaco’s peak and, how nervous and out of my comfort zone I felt. The path was narrow, slippery and gravelly. I did consider turning back several times because of the terrain and exposure.

I persevered, and continued onward keeping my weight forward and my body very low to the ground. That was my logic!

I reached the peak by climbing over and around the above rocks. Can you see my footprints in the snow?! Standing on the peak surrounded by amazing views and the Beagle Channel, I was very relieved and proud I’d made it. It was worth the push and inner talk to myself!

The getting back down part I was slightly apprehensive about. My solution was to shimmy down on my bum. Not the most dignified way, but it got me down quicker than I thought and less scared.

I do want to say that the exposure and snow made me more nervous than other hikers who were fine with the path.

For more information about the hike itself and my experience you can read my other post here. If you are looking to do a hike in Ushuaia, I recommend this as one to do – for the views and sense of accomplishment!
